Is your productivity where you want it be?
While I might not have majored in productivity in college or anything like that, I do run several businesses (some of which depend on deadlines), live on and run a farm/ranch with over 191 acres with as many animals as Old McDonald had AND have a family to care for.
While wearing all these “hats”, I’ve learned a few things about productivity that might come in handy to your business. Here are a few tips that I feel are important:
Posture
Let’s face it. We all have to work with computers and phones. Make the effort to sit up to train your body to get used to having your back straight. Exercise or stretch for even just a few minutes a day because your posture greatly affects your stamina for work and your quality of life after work hours as well. Who wants to keep ending the day with a sore neck and back right?
Process
You need to schedule your routine and you have to be mindful of it. Otherwise, you will fall back to your tendencies like spending too much time on social media, leisure, or on one particular task only. Set a routine so that you’re able to go through all the tasks you need to go through. Just remember to prioritize your most important tasks where it’s most appropriate. Eg., is it best to jump on a Zoom call in the morning or in the afternoon? Is it better to go through your numbers first thing in the morning or later in the day?
Procrastinate
Our brains are always finding the easiest way to finish a task. In other words, it doesn’t like to tire itself out. Therefore, when you have tasks at hand, you tend to do other mindless chores, or maybe stop by a coffee shop, or maybe watch just one more tv series episode. The upside is that our brains can also be tricked!
Next time you feel like binge-watching another season, just dive right in! And maybe have your laptop beside you. Maybe go ahead and do what you like to do best when you procrastinate. But this time be mindful to bring your work with you. Sometimes you can trick your brain into thinking it’s doing something purely for fun but in reality, you’re actually getting work done!
Pomodoro
There is such a thing as being too productive. Take short but frequent breaks in between tasks. The Pomodoro technique refers to focusing your workload into 25-minute increments spaced with a 5-min break to move around, stretch, and to generally just break your focus especially when you are stuck doing a heavy or intense task.
Studies show that you are statistically more likely to finish a difficult task when you take a break after hitting dead ends or when you feel like you’re slowing down or going around in circles. While it may be tempting to “get it over with,” you are actually better off taking a break to freshen up your perspective.
And just like that, you can practice these tips every day until you find your best daily routine. Remember that it’s not about the big tasks that you can accomplish, but it’s about the habits you build that will make every day productive!
